Mondays & Wednesdays ~ May to September
Experienced local apiarists, Skye and Josh, from Overleigh Apiaries, are offering you a glimpse into the world of keeping your own bees and producing your own delicious honey, right here on our park near Glastonbury in Somerset.
The experience is open to anyone, not just those staying at Old Oaks Touring & Glamping.
The aim of this course is to learn how honeybee colonies operate and to see what goes on inside a beehive. It is designed as a taster session into the life of a beekeeper and colony management. Getting up close and personal, you will have the opportunity to handle the beautiful bees and truly appreciate what they do for our environment.
Skye & Josh will explain the life cycle of the honey bees and the different bees that make up the hive. You will be able to see the queen, new bees emerging, nectar and pollen being gathered as well as much more!
This experience lasts for approximately 60 minutes in which you will be provided with all equipment and personal protective clothing necessary. The only thing we ask you to bring / wear is suitable footwear. We recommend welly boots or walking boots with high ankle coverage.
Workshops take place from May to Sept and will usually be on a Monday or Wednesday at 11am. Some other days may be available. Max group size: 5
Please note these experiences are weather dependent. Just like us, bees don’t like getting wet in the rain! In the event of bad weather, Skye and Josh will do their best to postpone and organise another session for you, most likely on the Wednesday or Thursday of the same week, if this fits in with your stay, or another suitable date. However, if your experience has to be cancelled due to the weather and we cannot organise another session for you, you will receive a full refund.
Places are bookable on Overleigh Apiaries website here.
Overleigh Apiaries honey is also available to purchase in our onsite shop, alongside some lovely beeswax wraps, a environmentally friendly alternative to cling film. Later in the year, we’ll also have our own Old Oaks honey, produced by the bees right here. You can’t get more local than that!
