Walking
Sitting at an impressive 76 square miles, you might not be surprised that the hills are home to a huge range of magnificent walks. With walks passing through limestone quarries, valleys and villages, Cheddar Gorge and so much more, there is plenty to see as you wander across the hills. Explore which walk suits you.
Outdoor Pursuits
Experience a range of activities as you explore the wonders of the Mendip Hills! Actives include dry ski slopes, a private rock sport quarry, an onsite cave and so much more. Mendip Activity Centre has a number of different trips and ideas for an action-packed day! The qualified instructors are experts in leading customers through their activities, if you’re an adrenaline junkie, you’re sure to find something for you here!
Wildlife
In amongst the rare habitat of limestone grassland and limestone heath, plants such as ling, bell heather and western gorse thrive here. The birdlife is diverse, keep an eye out for green woodpeckers, skylarks and willow warblers. A not so ordinary sky dweller can also be found… The caves in the Mendips make for the perfect home for bats, if you hang around until dusk you may just be able to see them!
Cheddar Caves and Gorge
This breathtaking gorge is the largest in Britain, home to the famous Cheder Caves. With sheer cliff faces standing at 450m above the winding roads, the gorge is often referred to as “Britain’s Grand Canyon’! Head into the caves to discover ghostly mirror pools and large stalactites and stalagmite – mineral deposits creating a dramatic landscape through the caves. As you emerge above ground, challenge yourself to the 274 step climb to the lookout tower or the cliff-top gorge walk!
Take to the saddle
If you’re wanting to enjoy the views of the Hills from a higher vantage point, hop on horseback and let the horses take you through the hills, woods and stunning landscape. There are a number of horse riding centres close to our adults only touring a glamping site. Try out Ebborlands Farm Riding Centre, situated on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills.
Work on your swing
When you stay at our adults-only touring and glamping park, there are a variety of golfing choices, including Mendip Spring Golf Club – one of the leading golf clubs in the South West of England, situated amongst beautiful countryside. You will struggle to find greens with a better view!
Brean Down
At the most westerly point, you’ll find the 98-metre high cliffs at Brean Down. Here you can enjoy a beach walk or wander the 1.5 miles along the natural pier. Steeped in history from prehistoric worship to Second World War weapon testing, there is so much to discover along this coastline, including a Roman temple and Palmerston Fort!
